Dr. Smith was born in Pocatello, Idaho and raised in the Marsh Valley area of eastern Idaho. He graduated from Marsh Valley High School in 1971 and then served a mission from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Australia, Italian speaking.

Dr. Smith's Undergraduate work was done at Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho where he received a B.S. in Zoology. He went on to medical school at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington from 1982 through 1986. Dr. Smith continued with his postgraduate work at the University of Washington, where he was a Resident in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1986 through 1987. He then completed his general surgery residency at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan 1987 through 1992. While in Michigan, Dr. Smith served as a flight physician on Midwest Medflight Medical Helicopter service, was Deputy Medical Examiner from Washtenaw County, and Emergency Medicine Physician at Saline Hospital, Saline Michigan.

Dr. Smith's Fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery was earned at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Wake Forest University, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina from 1992-1994.

Dr. Smith has held professional licensure in Michigan, Washington, North Carolina, Idaho, and Utah. He presently holds active licensure in Idaho and Utah, and is a member in good standing with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Medical Association, Fellow status in American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the Idaho Medical Association and the Southern Idaho Medical Association.

Dr. Smith has earned Board Certification in the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery.
